When I found this particular ceramic plate at a store’s clearance table I knew it would eventually be used in a still life piece. It was that raw bright earth red unglazed clay edge that ended up becoming an important harmonious colour companion to the end grain of the oak tabletop. The arrangement of the recently purchased pansies and the impending planting of them invoked a formal setting in my mind. A quiet yet contrasted painting, where in this circumstance of symbolism and atmosphere, was achieved from this arrangement.
